Use 100% pure body art quality henna powder. Sorry I know you said no henna but this is the purest form of henna you can find and does not have additives or chemicals nor metal dyes. It is naturally and if you use henna and indigo you will achieve your desired color. Use moroccan henna as your best henna powder for the tone you want as well.

What are metal dyes?

Well, just get a Garnier Fructis dye kit from the drug store. It's about $4. It lasts a long time, and the color turns out really nice and rich. Not nasty and streaky.

Henna works really well, but it might turn your hair kind of auburn, with a hint of redness.

Also use Pantene Expressions for Brunettes. It works way better than John Freida. Get it from Target for just $2 a bottle.

if you have thick and long hair and you wanna dye it lighter, you should get it done professionally. I have DARK brown (almost black) hair and it's super thick and i've never had any luck dying it to a noticeably lighter color. if u want it really light, they'll probably have to bleach and strip the color away.

if you don't want to go through all that, a good dye is Clairol Natural Instincts, but it won't come out as light as u might want it.

First and foremost sometimes removing black dye is almost impossible. Lightning or trying to remove the black should be done by a professional. I have 3 beauticians in my family... please believe I know about hair. Go to a professional.

well if youre going from black to medium youll prolly need to strip the color out before dying it again--i dont know if you can buy color stripping stuff but if not you can bleach it then dye it brown. one time i dyed my hair too dark so i tried just dying it lighter and absolutely nothing happened--so yea--if that doesnt sound good just go to the salon
